Isabel Subirats, founding mother of Ruta de la Sal Ragatta, winner of the Marcial Sánchez Barcáiztegui Award

Isabel Subirats, founding mother of the Ruta de la Sal regatta, has been awarded the Marcial Sánchez Barcáiztegui prize, which is presented every year by the Palma International Boat Show committee, organised by the Balearic Institute for Business Innovation (IDI).

The director general of Industrial Policy, Manel Porras, presented Subirats with the prize this morning at the Moll Vell fair complex. The ceremony was attended by Nuria Hinojosa, the managing director of IDI and the boat show’s director, Chema Sans.

Manel Porras declared that this prize is well deserved by Isabel Subirats and recognises all the work she has carried out to promote the nautical sector and at such a well-known regatta as the Ruta de la Sal.

Isabel Subirats thanked the committee for recognising the 40 years she has dedicated to the promotion of offshore cruiser-yacht sailing and said that ”this prize is the cherry on top of all of my work within the sailing world.”

Subirats also added that ”the Ruta de la Sal was conceived when we were returning from sailing around the Pityusic Islands and we stopped in Barcelona. That was when Pepe told me that we had just completed edition zero of what would later become this regatta.”

Isabel Subirats is the founding mother of the Ruta de la Sal and has dedicated an entire life to the sea. The first ever Ruta de la Sal regatta launched over Easter week in 1989, which means that this year is the 32nd edition, and is the most established offshore regatta in Spain and a stand-out event on the international regatta calendar.

Isabel Subirats herself is also an inspirational figure in the sector and through the Ruta de la Sal she has helped to boost women’s role in the world of sailing. New this year is the Salina category, for which the boat in question has to be skippered by a woman and 50% of the crew must also be female.

The Marcial Sánchez Barcáiztegui Prize is an award which recognises the people or institutions whose business or sporting activities have contributed to the promotion of the nautical sector in all its forms. The trophy is presented in honour of the illustrious admiral and former president of the naval commission, Marcial Sánchez Barcaiztegui.

Previous winners of the Marcial Sánchez Barcaiztegui award have been the Naval Commission for Regattas in the Balearics (2013), the S.A.R Princesa Sofia Trophy (2014), the Consell de Mallorca’s Aixa Teaching School (2015), Margarita Dahlberg (2016), Diego Colón de Carvajal (2017) and Miquel Suñer (2018).
